RENAMEPILOT

How to batch rename files on Windows

Batch renaming changes many filenames in one operation. A consistent pattern makes photos, documents and project assets easier to find. RenamePilot is a Windows file renamer with supported English instructions, a preview and Undo for the most recent operation.

Start with a small sample

Copy four unimportant files into a test folder. Keep a backup before changing important filenames: applications, playlists and project documents may refer to the original paths. Renaming a file can break those references.

1. Add files or a folder

Open Smart File Renamer and choose Add files for a selection, or Add folder for a whole folder. Enable Include subfolders only when you want files from nested folders included. Check the selected file count. Checked files hidden by a search filter still belong to the operation.

2. Choose a naming pattern

For a numbered batch, try the supported instruction Rename files to Vacation and start numbering at 001. You can also start with the Number files quick action and adjust the controls. The app follows defined command patterns; it does not understand every possible English sentence.

For example, four files named IMG_1001.jpg through IMG_1004.jpg can become Vacation-001.jpg through Vacation-004.jpg. Check the preview to confirm the exact separator, numbering and order before proceeding. File extensions are preserved by default.

3. Review the preview

Compare the original and proposed names side by side. Check the first and last numbers, extensions, selected count and duplicate-name warnings. If two files would receive the same destination name, change the pattern or selection before renaming. A preview changes no files.

4. Rename and check the result

Choose Rename selected and confirm. Inspect the resulting filenames in the app and your folder. Avoid moving or editing those files until you have checked the result, particularly if you might use Undo.

How to undo a batch rename

Use Undo last action and confirm to restore names from the most recent operation. Recovery checks for missing files, changed contents and occupied destination names. Undo can be blocked by these changes, so it is not a replacement for backups.

Large batches and system requirements

RenamePilot supports up to 500,000 files per batch on Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit, with .NET Framework 4.8. Use Add folder for large collections. Runtime and memory use depend on storage, antivirus and the files involved; the capacity is not a speed guarantee.
